Types of Internet Connections

What is DSL?

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) uses a connection that looks like a phone line. This connection is different than a phone line since it allows for Internet connection. DSL is much faster than dial-up connections.

What is Satellite Internet?

Satellite internet is sent wireless to a satellite unit on the home. The satellite, however, might have wires running from the unit to the different parts of the home. Satellite internet is available in any area and has similar bandwidth to DSL and Cable Internet. Satellite Internet often feels slower due to the nature of the connection.

What is Cable Internet?

Cable internet uses the same type of wires that gives a house connection to cable TV. Cable internet speed is similar to DSL speeds but can be faster in different areas.

What is Fiber?

Fiber internet is the fastest available internet to consumers. This connection is made up of fiber optic cables that can transmit large amounts of data at very high speeds. Fiber optic is not widely available, however, due to the high cost of installing the fiber optic cables.

What is Fixed Wireless?

Fixed Wireless internet is accessed by attaching a small antenna to the outside of your home. This antenna talks to a near by wireless hub usually found on a tower. Due to the close distance between the antenna and tower, Fixed Wireless internet can have similar speeds to DSL.
